1. The Amazing Digital Circus

A perfect blend of comedy, psychological horror and a lot I can’t put into words just yet — wrapped in a philosophically-rich blanket.

  • 90s 3D CGI animation aesthetics but what if it looked really good.
  • The Amazing Digital Circus is laden with allusions to video games (similar to Mortal Kombat but more subtle). Comparitively, the allusions are less fourth wall breaking here because of the (spoilers for the show’s obvious premise) conceit of the show itself taking place within a simulation.

2. Chainsaw Man

One of the best seasons of anime I’ve ever watched. What if shounen anime was actually sort of a seinen anime and was actually worth watching.

  • Zero cringe.
  • All killer no filler.
  • Amazing English VO. The script/VO is so good that I would believe it if you told me the show was originally animated for the English lip flaps and then was later re-dubbed in Japanese. That’s a recurring theme for the Mappa shows that I’ve seen, they don’t skimp on their VO.
  • Amazing jokes, I’m laughing out loud a bunch.
  • Weird AF premise that’s executed on perfectly.
  • Great characters.
  • Unique outro animations + music for each episode is bananas.
  • MAPPA stays winning. Some of their shows are a cut above the rest. Zombieland Saga is also fantastic.
  • Shounen-like but this show’s saving grace is its seinen tone and genuineness.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX

Everything I hate about anime in a single show — art made to serve as wide of an audience as possible rather than art made to communicate anything whatsoever about anything. I’m not asking for much, I’m just asking for media to have something for me to latch on to that goes beyond me trying to figure out what the checklist of tropes the creators were told to include which resulted in the production of this cynical trash

  • I might be done with Gundam. I have not one but two GSuuuuuuX-branded Gundam models and I will forever be reminded of the low bar of quality that most anime fail to reach and that most anime enjoyers have been trained to be satisfied by.
