Strat’s Nuttiest Movie List

List of movies I’ve watched starting from the nuttiest (non-derogatory) to the shittiest:

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Released 2001-12-19 · Watched 2026-08-28

  • Extended edition because more is better (according to Louis).

2. Mortal Kombat

Released 2021-04-08 · Watched 2026-10-02

  • The number of references per minute was really high but I appreciated almost all of them. The movie takes into account that you’ve probably played a Mortal Kombat game.
  • It’s a Mortal Kombat movie that’s good good not meme good.
  • Way better than it needed to be. If you’re expecting anything other than a really solid Mortal Kombat movie, you will be disappointed.
  • It is surprisingly funny — most of the characters in the ensemble cast feel fleshed-out and they play off of one another in almost improv-like way, constantly riffing.
  • Don’t watch the sequel — its existence makes this movie worse retroactively.

3. The One

Released 2001-11-02 · Watched 2026-09-18

  • Panned by critics when it came out (thanks 9/11).
  • Watching evil Jet Li fight good Jet Li in his pursuit to become the titular One by killing all the other Jet Li(s) in the multiverse while being pursued by multiverse cops Funsch (played by Jason Statham) and Roedecker (played by Delroy Lindo) is truly something else.

4. Demolition Man

Released 1993-10-08 · Watched 2026-08-21

  • A super cop, John Spartan (played by Sylvester Stallone), and a super criminal, Simon Phoenix (played by Wesley Snipes), are both cryogenically frozen for their mutual disregard for civilian casualties. Years later Simon Phoenix thaws out, breaks free and starts causing havoc in a world where crime has been eradicated, until now. Sandra Bullock, future cop and fan of the 90s, thaws John Spartan out to help the cops of this more peaceful era deal with Simon Phoenix…
    • Wild.
  • Serious question: Did the Halo and Gears of War devs both watch this movie? Yes they did.

5. Mortal Kombat II

Released 2026-04-27 · Watched 2026-10-09

  • Finish it! (The movie I mean). What a shame…
  • Mortal Kombat II feels like a cynical sequel. It pales in comparison to the first movie.
  • Mortal Kombat II de-emphasizes the best part of the first movie — the ensemble cast’s improv-like comedy constantly riffing off of one another keeping the ratio of jokes to runtime ratio high without skimping on the movie’s character and world building.
  • This sequel spends more time on interminable fights that are cool but don’t serve as an equivalent replacement to the great script of the first movie.
  • Broadly, the script seems much weaker and the actors don’t seem to have been given much to work with here. The original script writers have been thrown to the wayside, only to be replaced by Jeremy Slater who’s biggest claim to fame is his work on the script for the live action Death Note movie from 2017.
    • If you know you know. To be fair, I love this live action adaptation of Death Note. Although, the poor quality of the Death Note script makes for a charming, bizarre and completely out-of-touch-with-reality movie. That’s not the case for Mortal Kombat II — it’s just bad.

6. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Released 2002-12-18 · Watched 2026-09-04

  • Extended edition because more is better (according to Louis).

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Released 2003-12-17 · Watched 2026-09-11

  • Extended edition because more is better (according to Louis).
